Breadcrumbs are a visual indication of where in the site hierarchy a user currently is. Now, breadcrumbs are typically found on e-commerce sites and that’s because e-commerce sites have a very deep site structure. So might be looking at something that is two or three categories deep and when and where you are on the site. But that doesn’t mean that isn’t value for smaller local businesses to implement these breadcrumbs. Not only do breadcrumbs add value to your users but they do two things for your SEO. One you can help provide Google with another understanding of how you have organized your site. And that will give you another chance to win some rank for your topic. But you can end up with a more robust search result and a better search result draws attention even if you are further down the listing and that give you a higher click through rate. As a user that is a real good visual indication and this is where breadcrumbs can be useful if you operate multiple locations. Here on a search a user might see the locations breadcrumbs under the title and understand that you have more than one location. Now, the best way to implement breadcrumbs is by using structured data to indicate to Google that what you have is indeed a breadcrumb and to do that I really recommend to you take a look at the documentation provided by Google. I’ll go directly to the link but you can find this simply by going to Google search for rich snippets breadcrumbs. You can implement breadcrumbs just by doing links that are separated with this little arrow icon and Google will do its best understanding that what you have as breadcrumbs but I really recommend that you take a step further and implement what is called microdata. Breadcrumbs are a worthwhile time investment if they make sense for your website. If you have a very flat site structure breadcrumbs are not going to make sense.
